1. Davids pet pidgeon Kubush becomes very important, because when they smelt danger, he and his friends didn't come in time for feeding. This was an important part of David's survival because when Kubush didn't come for feeding, his mother knew that birds could sense danger, and begged them to all hide. if they hadn't hid, the Nazis would have killed them all like everyone else who was living in the building.
2. I think that when they bought the camp, it was originally intended as a vacation camp for tourists, and they didn't have enough money to change what the sign said. My second guess, is that the vacation camp sign is a disguise in case the allies ever came to win the war (which they did =D) they would overlook it. My last guess is that it was just put up there for the soldiers to laugh at and make crude jokes about.
