RESPONSE:
What's happened in the story so far, is that David Copperfield (Jr.) was born a boy, much to the dismay of his selfish godmother, Betsy Trotwood, who had been hoping to find a girl so that she could pressure David's mother into naming the girl, Betsy Trotwood Copperfield. Unfortunately, she took her anger out on the poor, meek, old doctor who had helped his mother. Apparently, David Copperfield had an extremely photographic memory, since he could remember things from when he was a baby.
